This second generation ambulatory care center was designed inside the footprint of a former grocery store. Unlike it’s sister project in Smokey Point, opportunities to connect patient wayfinding with natural light are limited to main circulation paths of travel. A feeling of spaciousness is achieved through the use of cove lighting and a skylit, sculpted ceiling above the central “living room”. This space orients the overall clinic experience on a pivot point between clinical spaces. A strong central axis, warm wood and illuminated pod numbering clarifies wayfinding, increasing patient satisfaction. Virtual reality tools were used to visualize decision points along the patient experience journey, providing client confidence in this critical aspect of design. The planning model, warm neutral palette, custom seating, and lighting strategies support the client brand in a meaningful, yet cost effective way.
